문화적 차이는 세계가 글로벌화되는 가운데서도 인간의 교류와 의사소통에 지장을 초래합니다.                              

문화와 세계관의 차이로 인하여 오해와 갈등이 초래되기도 합니다. 인간의 종교적 신념을 변화시키고 세계관을 변형하고자 하는 기독교 사역도 문화적 차이를 고려하지 않으면 안 됩니다.

교차문화학 (intercultural studies)는 변화하는 세상에서 복음을 통해 세계관을 변혁하기 위한 학제간 연구 (interdisciplinary studies)를 표방합니다. 신학을 중심으로 문화인류학, 교육학, 지역학 등의 관련 분야들을 통 합적으로 연구하는 학문입니다. 지식은 학문의 분야별로 분파화된 (compartmentalized) 구도 속에서는 제대로 습득할 수 없습니다. 통합적으로 연구할 때 비로소 사회문화적 실재에 바로 접근할 수 있습니다. 글로벌 시대 교회의 사역은 이런 통합적 이해 속에서 다양한 차원의 연구를 필요로 합니다. 특별히 현장조사에 기반을 둔 전문적인 연구가 필요합니다. CIIS는 이런 필요를 채우기 위해 설립되었습니다.

Differences in culture and worldview hinder intercultural communication and cooperation even in this ever-globalizing world for they often cause misunderstandings and conflicts.                              

The intercultural activities of Christian churches and organizations to transform other religious beliefs and practices need to consider such differences.
The discipline of intercultural studies takes interdisciplinary approaches to study ways to communicate the gospel in this ever-changing world integrating theories and insights of cultural anthropology, sociology, education, area studies, and other disciplines based on theological foundations.

With this kind of integrative approach we believe we can gain access to the sociocultural realities of the world overcoming the limitations of compartmentalized approaches.
